7 iPhone cases that our editorial team uses

Whether colorful, with a card slot, chain or even waterproof – smartphone cases are available in a wide variety of designs. Especially for Apple’s iPhone, the offer is huge.

Some people like to change the colors of their mobile phone case, others like it more classic. Still others carry around half their wallets in their cases. But how do our editors actually handle it? TECHBOOK gives an insight into which iPhone cases they have chosen and why.

TORRAS Hard Case – Andreas Filbig, TECHBOOK

Hard Case by TORRASPhoto: TECHBOOK

I haven’t used a protective case for years. That’s what my iPhones looked like. Nevertheless, the feel and look of the iPhone that Apple intended was always more important to me than protection against scratches and quirks. I’ve never had glass breakage, but on my last device, the iPhone 11, there was so much unsightly damage that I didn’t like the device anymore. I wanted a case for my iPhone 13. It should feel good and not be too thick. I randomly ordered the TORRAS hard case on Amazon and after three months I am completely satisfied. It lays flat and looks great even after a few falls. There is also hardly any dirt between the smartphone and case that could scratch the glass back.

Apple Original Cases – Adrian Mühlroth, TECHBOOK

I have bought genuine Apple leather cases for both my personal iPhone 13 mini and my iPhone 12 from work. The advantage of the cases is that they protect the entire iPhone, with the protruding edge on the camera and screen. In addition, they are extremely precise, so that hardly any dirt can penetrate. And if that happens anyway, the particles get stuck in the microfiber lining on the inside and cannot scratch the iPhone. Another plus point is that the leather cases support Apple’s Magsafe and I can use my accessories such as a holder and wireless power bank with it. The only drawback: Real leather changes over time and develops a patina. That doesn’t bother me personally, but I’m sure there are others who don’t like it.

GameBoy Case – Adrian Mühlroth, TECHBOOK

For my older iPhone 6s I use a case that I once ordered from Amazon just for fun. A fully-fledged GameBoy clone with a small selection of retro games is integrated into the case – complete with screen, control buttons and even a speaker. I wouldn’t take the iPhone and case with me everywhere, but it’s always a nice pastime.

Elgato Liquid Silicone Case – Rita Deutschbein, TECHBOOK

The iPhone 13 is available in the new color rose, which I also chose. So I was looking for a sturdy case that complemented the colorful look of my iPhone well. I found what I was looking for at Elgato. The Liquid Silicone Case for the iPhone 13 is a simple case with no frills, which also has a fair price and fits the smartphone very well. Inside it has a layer of microfiber that protects the glass surface of the smartphone. On the outside, it consists of a silicone mixture that is very pleasant to the touch. It is soft and velvety and, with its non-slip material, ensures that the device lies securely in the hand. The material of the case goes around the edges of the iPhone slightly, so that corners and edges are well protected in the event of a fall. The light frame around the camera also ensures that it does not get scratched. Pretty to look at, elegant but still sturdy – I really like the iPhone case from Elgato.

Vena vCommute iPhone Case – Nuno Alves, BOOKs

Admittedly, my iPhone case Vena vCommute is not particularly aesthetic, it transforms the elegant smartphone (an iPhone 12 Pro) into a robust, unattractive device on the outside. But the case offers numerous other advantages that are important to me. Since I don’t like walking around with a wallet, I use the integrated card holder for my documents: bank card, ID card, driver’s license, insurance card and gym card. Only four cards fit in, but with a little will you can do more. In addition, the Vena vCommute case also has a stand function, so I can use it to watch videos on the plane or elsewhere. In fact, the robust design also has a function: the case has successfully cushioned the iPhone from many a fall. My conclusion: extremely ugly, but just as practical.

Ideal of Sweden iPhone Case – Larissa Königs, TRAVELBOOK

The hype surrounding the iPhone cases from Ideal of Sweden was actually almost over, so I got my first case from the brand in spring 2021. Before, it just didn’t make any sense for me to spend so much money on a case with my “old” cell phone – because at Ideal of Sweden they are happy to pay 30 euros for a case. Since I had been flirting with the marble-look design, which fits perfectly with my laptop sleeve, for a long time, I finally decided on the sleeve despite the high price. Since then I’ve been testing them extensively: I drop my phone regularly (about 5 times a week). So far, the case has completely protected the back from damage. However, it has partially cracked at the corners. I’m sure I’m also the “hard case” for all mobile phone cases – but for the price I would have expected even more stability. After a year my conclusion is: If you are more into design and like to spend more for your case, you are in good hands with Ideal of Sweden. But clumsies like me should also consider alternatives that offer more security.

iPhone case by TUCCH – Alexandra Grauvogl, FITBOOK

I have a TUCCH flip case for my iPhone XR. I find it very handy because the screen is super protected when I just toss the iPhone in my backpack or purse. In addition, thanks to the pockets on the inside, I have enough space for ID, credit card, etc., so you can easily go out without a wallet. When folded, I also use the case as a stand-up aid for my cell phone, for example during video calls. Small disadvantage: If you want to take photos, you always have to be careful that the cover does not fold in front of the lens.
