The police judge in East Brabant has sentenced 58 asylum seekers staying in the asylum seekers’ center in Budel in the past three months. That is what State Secretary Eric van der Burg of Asylum and Migration says in response to questions from Member of Parliament Joost Eerdmans. The politician of JA21 is concerned about the situation in the area around the asylum seekers’ center.
According to State Secretary Van der Burg:
- the court imposed a fine 16 times (whether or not partially conditional)
- the court imposed a prison sentence 42 times (whether or not partially conditional)
- the Central Consultation for Asylum Seekers (COA) 130 measures imposed on aliens from this asylum seekers’ center. For example, 90 foreign nationals received no pocket money and 10 people were temporarily denied access.
There has been a lot of talk about the asylum seekers’ center in recent months after a series of violent incidents, including stabbings. For this reason, an emergency ordinance has been in force since the beginning of last month and a preventive search is allowed. According to the ministry, the nuisance is caused by asylum seekers of different nationalities, including Algerian. Although there is also a suspicion that a great deal of nuisance is caused by asylum seekers posing as Algerians.
Unacceptable
Every incident is ‘one too many’, writes Van der Burg. “I find the extent and seriousness of the incidents in Budel unacceptable. I take the concerns of the municipality of Cranendonck and the COA very seriously and also share those concerns. An emergency ordinance is a heavy measure, but the safety of local residents, fellow residents and employees should always come first.”
More security
According to the State Secretary, enough measures have now been taken to restore peace at the asylum seekers’ center. Security on the ground is being stepped up and cases of asylum seekers who do not stand a chance to stay are treated with higher priority. Finally, Van der Burg writes that in the coming period he will continue to discuss the security situation with the municipality and COA, among others.
