3rd league: TV money remains evenly distributed – 50 percent more

Young talent funding pot extended

At its meeting on Friday, the German Football Association agreed on the new distribution of TV money in the 3rd division. In the new media rights cycle, which runs from the 2023/24 season to the summer of 2027, the distribution key set in previous years will be retained. As a result, all third division teams receive the same amount, regardless of audience rating or table position. This should further promote the sporting balance of the league.

Overall, the DFB will generate license revenues of EUR 104.8 million for the marketing of national media rights during this period (EUR 26.2 million per season). 90 percent of this amount goes to the clubs, so from next season €23.58 million – that’s almost 50 percent more than this year. As before, second teams from licensed clubs are excluded. Without BVB II and SC Freiburg II, the annual distributions amount to 1.31 million euros per club.

DFB decides: youth funding pot will remain in place in 2023/24

In addition, the DFB has decided that the clubs in the 3rd division will be rewarded for training talent in the coming season. The junior funding pot was extended until the summer of 2024. The financial volume of the funding measure is still EUR 2.95 million gross per year.

The youth promotion pot was introduced in autumn 2018 by the DFB presidium especially for the 3rd division. The grants flow into the non-profit sector of the respective associations and may only be used for the non-profit promotion of young talent.

There is money for the maintenance of a performance center and the playing times of players in the 3rd division with German nationality under the age of 21. When calculating the payouts for the playing times, the academy criteria as well as the exact age and length of training of the players concerned are taken into account. In the past season, TSV 1860 Munich benefited the most from the premiums with 448,259.19 euros, TSV Havelse only received 2,267.64 euros.
