Three goals were not enough for SSV Ulm 1846 Football to win against VfL Osnabrück. As a result, the Sparrows are stuck in the relegation battle.
When SSV Ulm had made up the two-goal deficit, it looked as if the Sparrows could make a big breakthrough. But after several serious mistakes, Ulm had to accept a clear 3:5 defeat. Tony Rudy Lesueur (2nd), Niklas Wiemann (16th) initially shot Osnabrück into the lead. Dennis Chessa (34th) and Paul-Philipp Besong (50th) were able to equalize for Ulm. But Lars Kehl (57th & 58th) and Robin Meißner (74th) sealed Ulm’s defeat. Elias Löder did some cosmetic work in the final phase.
Ulm fell behind very early on
The game started with a few minutes delay because fans were using pyrotechnics in both corners. The smoke hadn’t quite cleared yet as Ulm was already 0-1 behind. A simple one-two between Lars Kehl and Fridolin Wagner and the Spatzen defense was eliminated. Wagner’s cross to the far post was completed by the free-standing Tony Rudy Lesueur with a volley (2′). Ulm pushed for a quick equalizer, but former Stuttgart player Leon Dajaku only hit the side netting (9th).
However, coach Pavel Dotchev’s team neglected counterattack protection in their attacks. David Kopacz was able to run towards Ulm’s goalkeeper Christian Ortag, who just prevented the score from making it 0-2 (15′). However, Ortag was powerless after that. Because the subsequent corner landed at the second post for Kopacz. After his header was passed to Niklas Wiemann, the 26-year-old just had to push the ball over the line (16th). Just a few minutes later, Ortag had to defuse another low shot from Lesueurs (22′).
Ulm equalizes and immediately receives the blow in the neck
Ulm was clearly inferior, but didn’t give up and got close before the break: After Dajaku’s chipped through ball, Dennis Chessa was able to poke the ball past Lukas Jonsson into the Osnabrück goal (34th). Jonathan Meier almost scored the equalizer on the way to the dressing room. But VfL keeper Jonsson was on point for Meier’s dropkick (37th). Despite Osnabrück’s many chances, Ulm went into the second half with a bearable 1-2 deficit.
There the desired equalizer came: Dajaku spooned the ball to Max Brandt with a free kick. The Osnabrück defense was able to collectively clear his shot – but right at the feet of Dajaku. He quickly spooned the ball back into the penalty area, where Paul-Philipp Besong headed the ball over the rushing Jonsson with his back to the goal (50th). However: The goal would never have withstood a VAR check because Brandt played the ball with his hand several times before he was able to control it. However, since there is no video evidence in the 3rd league, the goal counted.
Ulm is stuck in a relegation zone
However, the joy was only short-lived, very short-lived: Lars Kehl scored a double strike within 93 seconds. First from the edge of the penalty area (57th), then – after Marcel Seegert’s far too short back pass – from five meters (58th). Ulm didn’t have much to offer against Lower Saxony and conceded their fifth goal after Robin Meißner’s dropkick (72′). Elias Löder proved that Ulm still didn’t give up with his great header to make the final score 3-5 (87′). However, it was a deserved defeat that revealed major weaknesses in Ulm’s defense.
SSV Ulm 1846 is stuck in the relegation zone with 18 points, while VfL Osnbarück is now dreaming of a Christmas party in the relegation zone with 32 points. Next week Ulm will face the next top team. On Saturday, December 20th, they will compete at Rot-Weiss Essen at 2 p.m. Osnabrück plays against VfB Stuttgart II at the same time.
