SpVgg Unterhaching remains unbeaten in the 3rd league after a goalless draw against 1. FC Saarbrücken. There were few sporting highlights in the final game of the sixth match day; instead, the serious injury to FCS striker Patrick Schmidt overshadowed the encounter in the Unterhaching sports park.
The game mostly moved between the penalty areas, both teams wore themselves out in duels, but hardly ever threatened the goal. In the 31st minute, Schmidt and Unterhaching’s defender Benedikt Bauer had a fatal clash. Schmidt had obviously broken his leg during the action and his lower leg was sticking out after the scene. Bauer was first on the ball during his tackle before rushing into Schmidt.
A brief pack formation followed before both teams realized the seriousness of the situation. Emergency doctors and paramedics spent several minutes caring for Schmidt, who was carried off the pitch to applause. The players on the field were visibly exhausted until the break, and even after the break there were hardly any chances for either side. Shortly before the final whistle, the host loudly called for a penalty again, but Felix Bickel’s whistle remained silent after a handball by Saarbrücken’s Lukas Boeder.
Unterhaching remains the surprise of the season
Before the international break, Unterhaching came from the regional league to the 3rd league with a lot of momentum. In the cup, the former Bundesliga team created a sensation against 1. FC Augsburg and in the league they also got off to a positive start with two home wins and three draws away from home.
