3rd League: Rot-Weiss Essen releases captain Felix Bastians

Set aside “egoism”.

Captain Felix Bastians will no longer be on the pitch for Rot-Weiss Essen for the time being. As the third division team announced on Tuesday, the 35-year-old central defender has been released from training and games with immediate effect. This decision was made unanimously after a joint analysis by the board, sports management and coaching team. Bastians has been active for RWE since summer 2021 and has played 69 games since then. So far this season he has played six games in the 3rd league, in which Essen is in 15th place. Most recently it was a 0:5 defeat against SC Verl.

“In addition to the many positive developments of the last few weeks and the generally good start to the new season, we must note that there have been some tendencies and developments that we have to counteract. We will only be successful if sensitivities and egoisms are put aside and everyone submits 100 percent to the big picture. “Felix Bastians is increasingly no longer living up to the expectations of not only performing well on the pitch as a team captain, but also leading the way as a leader on the pitch and in the dressing room,” said the club statement.

It continues: “Without going into too much detail, we all rate this measure not only as necessary, but as having no alternative in order to provide a clear impulse.” Meanwhile, the team continues to enjoy full trust and has enough quality, to achieve the set goals. RWE did not provide any more specific information about the background to Bastians’ exemption.
