MSV Duisburg didn’t get beyond a draw at Viktoria Köln and missed out on returning to the top of the table.
The two teams drew 0-0 on Sunday evening. After an uneventful first half, both teams had good chances in the second half. Viktoria’s keeper Arne Schulz in particular held on to the point for Cologne in the end.
As a result of the draw, MSV winters as a newcomer in third place, two points behind league leader Energie Cottbus. Cologne is twelfth.
Hardly any notable completions in the first half
In a tough first half, both teams concentrated on defense and had hardly any ideas on offense – so compelling scoring opportunities were in short supply. Duisburg had the first significant chance through Conor Noß (28th), who moved into the penalty area at high speed from the left and was denied by Cologne keeper Arne Schulz with a shot from the outside of the wrist from a tight angle.
On the other side, Cologne’s Leonhard Münst (29th) came down the left side, but his shot missed the right corner by a meter. Viktoria had by far the best opportunity when Tim Kloss passed back to Lex-Tyger Lobinger (42nd) after a through pass from Florian Engelhardt from the baseline. The Cologne attacker’s direct pass flew over the Duisburg gate.
Braune saves Duisburg from falling behind
After the half-time break there was a little more movement in the game. Duisburg’s Patricks Sussek (46th) tried a volley from distance after being substituted on, and Schulz had the ball in the follow-up. A pressureless header from Kloss (53′) landed in the arms of MSV keeper Maximilian Braune.
Things became really dangerous for Duisburg in the 60th minute. Cologne’s David Otto crossed the ball from the left wing to the far post, where Simon Handle ran in and finished directly. MSV goalkeeper Braune parried the ball from close range with a lightning reflex with his outstretched foot. Another powerful shot from Otto (62′) flew just over the goal.
Schulz is also strong in goal
Duisburg then took the reins. Dittgen (72nd) dribbled into the penalty area from the right, left two opponents standing and took a shot – but Schulz parried. Just four minutes later, Schulz once again avoided the almost certain deficit when he remained the winner in a duel with Sussek (76th). In stoppage time, Sussek had the chance for the “Lucky Punch” (90+3), but this time too he was unable to overcome the strong Cologne keeper Schulz.
