3rd league: DFB condemns referee attack at SV Sandhausen

DFB condemns attack

After the late 1:2 defeat against newly promoted SSV Ulm 1846 in the 3rd league on Friday evening, Jürgen Machmeier, club president of SV Sandhausen, physically attacked the referee team. The 62-year-old pushed referee Florian Exner backwards with his chest as he left the field on the way to the dressing room, the DFB said on Sunday. Assistant Jonah Besong then also received a blow to the upper body.

Since no SVS security personnel were present in the Hardtwald stadium during the situation, the referee team returned to the field. It wasn’t until a little later that stewards made it possible for us to go into the cabin without any problems. Referee Exner had already sent off Sandhausen’s Felix Göttlicher with a yellow-red card in the 9th minute after repeated foul play, but it wasn’t until the 90th minute that Tobias Rühle scored the winning goal for the guests. After the final whistle, SVS sports director Matthias Imhof saw red after a verbal attack.

“It’s bad enough that referees are repeatedly insulted, defamed, threatened and attacked by spectators. But when a club president physically attacks the referee and his assistant, a new dimension has been reached,” said Lutz-Michael Fröhlich, managing director of sports and communications at DFB Schiri GmbH, horrified. This is “completely unacceptable”. “A president has a clear role model function, for football as a whole and in particular for fair and respectful treatment of the referees in this sport.” Imhof also lacked respect for the referee team with his behavior. “Such excesses cause massive damage to football’s image,” said Fröhlich.

SV Sandhausen will not comment on the incidents for the time being, said a spokesman for the “German Press Agency”. “What the referee delivered today was a red line that was crossed. I’ll go so far as to say that the game was already decided beforehand,” said Machmeier (quoted via “Heidelberg24“) raged after the final whistle and accused referee Exner of having shown “no tact”. “The referee clearly decided the game for me today,” continued Machmeier. Imhof also emphasized: “Today the game is entirely down to the referee, he decided the game.”
