2nd league: SC Paderborn gets an important threesome against 1. FC Kaiserslautern

SCP third for the time being

SC Paderborn inflicted the second defeat on 1. FC Kaiserslautern in a row and conquered the promotion relegation place in the 2nd Bundesliga at least until Sunday. In front of 14,701 spectators on Friday evening, Jannis Heuer scored in the 78th minute with a directly converted free kick to win 1-0 (0-0) for East Westphalia, who are third in the table and now have 38 points. The climber from Kaiserslautern remains fifth with 35 points for the time being.

The hosts, who have the strongest offensive in the league, found it difficult against the compact Palatinate. It only got really dangerous for the guests twice in the first half. First, Julian Justvan (9th) ran freely towards the FCK goal after a fine pass from Uwe Hünemeier, but failed because of the well-reacting guest goalkeeper Andreas Luthe. After a quarter of an hour, Marvin Pieringer couldn’t get his head behind the ball from close range.

The “Red Devils”, where coach Dirk Schuster made five changes in the starting XI after the recent 0-1 draw at FC St. Pauli, were waiting for their chance to counter. That came after 36 minutes when Terrence Boyd headed for the Paderborn goal alone, but pushed the ball too far. Heuer was able to clarify the situation with a tackle.

After the change, Justvan again had the lead for Paderborn on his feet, but aimed too high after a nice solo. The best opportunities for the visitors presented themselves to Boyd. In the 68th minute, the striker hit the crossbar from close range and in added time his header was cleared by Felix Platte just before the goal line.

2: 3 against Holstein Kiel: Eintracht Braunschweig defends itself too late

Eintracht Braunschweig experienced a bitter evening in the relegation battle. After a desolate start and later catching up, the promoted lost 2:3 (0:2) against Holstein Kiel and is now in danger of falling back to one of the relegation places this weekend. Fabian Reese (14th minute) and Hólmbert Aron Fridjónsson (22nd) scored early for Kiel. Timo Becker (49th) scored a third goal shortly after the break. Two goals from Maurice Multhaup (57th) and Danilo Wiebe (70th) gave most of the 18,747 spectators in Braunschweig hope for a turnaround.

The guests were also missing six injured players. But it was primarily Braunschweig who were unable to compensate for the loss of five central defenders. The newly formed emergency defense seemed disorganized from the start. And this lack of stability unsettled the entire team. Before the 0:1 cross giver Philipp Sander and goal scorer Reese were completely undisturbed. Before the 0:2, goalkeeper Jasmin Fejzic saved a shot from Steven Skrzybski right in front of Fridjónsson’s feet.

Braunschweig coach Michael Schiele changed three players at half-time. But not even three minutes later it was 0:3 because Eintracht was countered after their own corner kick. The climber came back with a lot of morale and fighting spirit. Now the uncertainty after the two defeats against Kaiserslautern and Magdeburg was also noticeable in the people of Kiel. Saulo Decarli missed the big chance to make it 3:3 after a corner kick (85th).
