SpVgg Greuther Fürth barely managed to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga. The “cloverleaf” is planning a different course for the future.

Daniel Meyer becomes the new sports director at SpVgg Greuther Fürth. As the club announced one day after the victory in the second division relegation against Rot-Weiss Essen, Meyer should lead the Franconians to success again. The 46-year-old was most recently sports director at Halleschen FC and previously worked as a coach. Meyer also gained experience in Aue as a coach and sports director, and also headed the youth performance center of 1. FC Köln. He also worked as a coach for Eintracht Braunschweig and the U19 team at RB Leipzig.

It remains to be seen whether the commitment also means the departure of sports director Stephan Fürstner, who had come under criticism. Fürstner took over the sporting directorship from ex-manager Rachid Azzouzi in autumn 2024, but was unable to calm the situation in Fürth. Quite the opposite: under the 38-year-old, the “cloverleaf” slipped into the relegation battle and had four coaches in a year and a half. Fürth has also been wrong too often on the transfer market in the recent past, which is why squad planner Ronny Philp is also counted alongside Fürstner.

No information on the contract term

Under Daniel Meyer, the record second division team (36 years of membership) wants to jump back into the top half of the table. Chairman of the Supervisory Board Peter Köhr explained: “We looked very extensively at the market and possible candidates for the position of Managing Director of Sports and were also supported by a specialized agency. Daniel Meyer convinced us of himself and his ideas in this process.”

Meyer’s contract is valid from June 1st, and the club has not publicly announced anything about the length of the term.
