Breathe a sigh of relief at 1. FC Magdeburg: After seven games without a win, FCM scored another three points on matchday 10 of the 2nd Bundesliga and beat Preußen Münster 2-0 (0-0) on Sunday. Maximilian Breunig gave the home team the lead from the penalty spot in the 75th minute. Rayan Ghrieb made the final score (90+2).
“With the 2-0 win in stoppage time, everything was over”commented Münster’s coach Alexander Ende, but praised the great fight of his team, which was missing numerous players due to injuries.
“That was a hard piece of work”said Magdeburg’s coach Petrik Sander. “We were afraid that we would have to suffer a lot. But the boys pulled through well.”
Although Magdeburg remains in last place in the table, it has caught up with its direct competitors VfL Bochum and Dynamo Dresden in terms of points (all seven points). Münster, on the other hand, failed to score for the first time under coach Alexander Ende and has now been without a win for three games. With eleven points, the Prussians are in eleventh place.
Prussia dominated the first half. In the second half, however, the FCM rewarded itself for a significant increase in performance.
Atik hit doesn’t count
Not only had Magdeburg not won a game since the 2-1 win against Dynamo Dresden on matchday two, they had also not scored a goal in five games. There was great celebration when a shot from Baris Atik hit the far corner (8th). The disappointment was even greater when referee Robin Braun conceded the goal. Alexander Ahl-Holmstöm was offside when the goal was scored.
As a result, a competitive game developed with clear advantages for Preußen Münster, who should have taken the lead in the 25th minute. Malik Batmaz ran freely towards Dominik Reimann after a dream pass from Zidan Sertdemir, but did not get the ball past the FCM goalkeeper. Six minutes later, Reimann saved again, this time from Oliver Batista Meier (31′).

Hendrix over the goal from five meters
Magdeburg played with a lot of passion, but repeatedly found themselves in trouble on defense. Münster had their next big chance in stoppage time in the first half. After a long throw-in, the ball landed at Jorrit Hendrix, who slammed the ball over the goal from five meters (45th + 2). So it went into the break goalless.
“I was convinced at half-time that we would win the game”said Sander anyway. And indeed: the game turned around in the course of the second half. Magdeburg was now the more active team and came close to the longed-for opening goal time and again. However, Münster’s Torge Paetow prevented that in the 54th minute when he threw himself into a shot from Atik. In the 70th minute, substitute Breunig came a step too late in the middle after a pass from Philipp Hercher.

Breunig frees Magdeburg from the point
In the 75th minute the time had come and 1. FC Magdeburg’s goal drought came to an end. Münster’s Batmaz and referee Braun also played a part in this. Batmaz was too impetuous in the duel with Alexander Nollenberger in their own penalty area, and Braun consequently pointed to the point. “Malik wants to help”apologized to Ende and understood the whistle: “It hits him easily.” Breunig scored Magdeburg’s first goal after 524 minutes. “You could hear the stones tumbling throughout the stadium.”said Sander and praised Breunig as “ripped off boy”.
Anyone who expected the Münster team to rebel in the final phase was disappointed. The Prussians did play forward, but far too timidly. The hosts posed more danger as they now wanted the second goal and were then rewarded: in stoppage time, Ghrieb, who had just been substituted, put the lid on it (90th + 2).
Magdeburg in Bochum, Münster against Kiel
The FCM will now face FV Illertissen in the DFB Cup on Wednesday (6 p.m.). The league then goes to VfL Bochum next Sunday (1:30 p.m.). Münster is no longer represented in the DFB Cup and will host Holstein Kiel on Friday evening (6.30 p.m.).
