2036 Olympics: Mexico withdraws bid

As of: January 17, 2024 9:22 p.m

The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has one less opponent in a possible bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics. The president of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM) announced that the country is suspending its efforts.

We had a conversation with the International Olympic Committee and realized that the competition is very tough“, said Maria Jose Alcala. Mexico is now considering a bid to host the Youth Olympic Games instead.

Mexico announced in October 2022 that it would once again try to host the Summer Games. Mexico City hosted the 1968 Olympics, and Bob Beamon, among others, wrote sports history in the mountain air with his century jump of 8.90 m. Mexico will be hosting the World Cup in two years together with the USA and Canada – for the third time after 1970 and 1986.

Large circle of interested parties

The 2036 Games are considered extremely competitive; according to IOC President Thomas Bach, the number of interested countries is in the double digits. In addition to Germany, which is only just defining the framework for an application, India, Qatar, Istanbul/Turkey and Nusantara/Indonesia, among others, have already registered their ambitions or announced applications.

The next three Summer Games will take place in Paris (July 26 to August 11, 2024), Los Angeles (2028) and Brisbane (2032).
