UEFA has fined the traditional French club Olympique Marseille millions of euros for violating Financial Fair Play rules. The club did not comply with the income regulations in the reporting periods 2023, 2024 and 2025 and therefore has to pay 6 million euros, the association announced following a decision by the in-house financial control committee.
UEFA also threatened to be excluded from the next European competition if the club does not reach its revenue target in the 2026/27 season. Marseille qualified for the Europa League last season. According to its own information, UEFA took into account the significant and unexpected drop in domestic broadcast rights revenue in its assessment. The French clubs were affected by this in the 2025/26 season. It will continue to have an impact in the coming season.
Last season’s fifth-place team also received an additional four million euros fine for violating squad cost rules. The decision took a long time. The club said in a statement that it had taken note of the decision. This will enable the club to take part in the Europa League next season.
“Above all, it reminds us of our current responsibility: it entails significant demands and fully commits Olympique Marseille. The club will continue to make every effort to fulfill its obligations and meet the conditions set by UEFA,” the statement said.
