The report concludes that 20 percent of European bumblebee species are on the red list of threatened species.

According to the Bee Foundation, an estimated 50 million bumblebees are active in the Netherlands during the season. “If one in five species disappears, that number will drop by about 10 million bumblebees, a dramatic decline in our natural pollinators.”

According to the foundation, bumblebee species are slowly disappearing due to a combination of pesticide use, flower poverty, lack of nesting and wintering places and climate change.

What can be done to prevent bumblebee populations from recovering?

The foundation calls on residents, schools and governments to actively contribute to the recovery of bumblebee populations. According to the foundation, “small choices” such as planting organic, poison-free flowers and flower bulbs, creating nesting places and mowing less can “make a difference”.
