Former Wolfsburg native Anselmo García MacNulty (23) is returning to Germany. The central defender is joining 1. FC Magdeburg and has reportedly signed a contract until 2029. The Irishman, who was born in Seville, Spain, is coming from Eredivisie club PEC Zwolle on a free transfer.

MacNulty moved from his hometown from Real Betis to the Wolves youth team in 2019. Two years later he received a professional contract, but he did not play for the Bundesliga team. In 2022 he initially went on loan to the Dutch second division team NAC Breda, then he moved permanently to Zwolle in the upper house. MacNulty was immediately a regular there and played 101 games (five goals).

“We are very happy that Anselmo has decided to move to our club. Despite his young age, he has already been able to gain valuable experience and has been a consistent regular player in his previous positions. With his positive mindset, his strong left foot and his physical presence at 1.90 meters, he will further strengthen our defense,” said sports director Peer Jaekel.

MacNulty, who is supposed to close the gap in the center of defense from Jean Hugonet (26, Hannover 96) and Marcus Mathisen (30, destination unknown), added: “After four years in the Netherlands, I am now taking the next step by moving to Magdeburg. 1. FC Magdeburg is a large, traditional club, the 2nd Bundesliga is a very attractive league. I am particularly looking forward to getting to know my teammates and then playing in front of these passionate fans.”
