Rien de Vries is a forest ranger at Staatsbosbeheer and explains: “Trees that are already repeling their leaves in August, do so in response to the drought. A lot of water evaporates through the leaves. It is precisely that water needs to survive. By spraying the leaves, there is more moisture in the tree”

And what about the mushrooms? Do they thrive precisely in wet weather conditions? Rien: “Many people think that mushrooms only grow in the fall, but they do that all year round.”
Now that it has been dry for a while, you see less or only shriveled mushrooms. Rien: “But as soon as it starts to rain, they shoot from the ground.”

Finally, Rien says that it is also possible that you will see few mushrooms coming autumn. “Mushrooms are extremely dependent on the weather, so it depends on the amount of rain. It is even possible that they sometimes do not grow for a year or two years.”
