Zelensky speaks to Pope, hopes for Vatican mediation

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky has discussed the situation in his country with Pope Francis. Vatican mediation to end suffering in Ukraine would be appreciated, Zelensky tweeted.

The head of state told the Catholic leader about the difficult humanitarian situation and the blockade of escape routes by Russian troops at besieged cities. Zelensky thanked Francis for prayers for Ukraine and peace.

The pope reiterated his call for an end to the war on Sunday. He spoke of a “senseless massacre” with “slaughter and atrocities” every day. “Unfortunately, the violent aggression against Ukraine is not slowing down,” he said. The day before, he had visited Ukrainian refugees in a children’s hospital in Rome.
