There was radio silence for weeks after the decision to close.

Discussions have now begun between the Zalando works council and management. “We sat down together,” said works council member Jana Clausen when asked in Erfurt. The employee representatives are initially seeking an economically sound justification for why Zalando’s Erfurt logistics center with 2,700 employees is to be completely closed at the end of September.

“We need numbers, data, facts,” said Clausen. “We will draw up a list of questions, we want to go into depth.” In a second step, the works council will use the data to talk about alternatives to ending the logistics center. “We want to see if there are alternative scenarios.”

The employee representatives are supported by a consultant and a lawyer. In contrast to Zalando management’s plans, neither a reconciliation of interests nor a social plan has been negotiated yet.

According to Clausen, the date has been set for a planned job fair, which will primarily focus on career prospects for Zalando employees whose fixed-term contracts will end in the next few weeks. The works council estimates this group to be around 500 employees.

The job fair is planned for February 26th at the Steigerwald Stadium in Erfurt. Around 60 employers from the region are expected to fill vacancies. According to the employment agency, the spectrum ranges from logistics to care, hospitality and trade to crafts.

The management of the online fashion retailer has so far left no doubt about the location closure in Erfurt. This was recently confirmed at a works meeting in Erfurt.
