While the men’s team of 1. FSV Mainz 05 is fighting against relegation in the Bundesliga, the youth team has achieved the greatest success in the club’s history. On Tuesday evening, the A-Youth team won 2-1 (1-1) against Manchester City in the UEFA Youth League and moved into the quarter-finals.

Tim Müller gave Mainz the lead after just 16 minutes, and Justin Oboavwoduo equalized shortly before half-time. In the second half, Philipp Schulz converted a penalty kick (53′), which was enough to win. The 18-year-old had already scored in the win against FC Barcelona (9:8 nE) in the round of 16.

Mainz 05 is the first of three possible Bundesliga youth teams to make it to the quarter-finals (March 12/13). FC Bayern will face Feyenoord Rotterdam on Wednesday, while RB Leipzig will face Real Madrid. Last year, only one German representative, Borussia Dortmund, made it and failed there against Hajduk Split (for an overview of 2022/23).
