An 18-year-old Syrian man has been sentenced to 365 days of youth detention for two shoplifting incidents and serious assault, of which 150 days are conditional. The sentence is equal to the demand of the Public Prosecution Service.
The teenager was sent away from asylum shortly after his arrival in the Netherlands and then lived on the street. The man confessed to the thefts. He hoped to sell the loot on the street. He also admitted to the fights on Stationsplein and Mercuriusplein in Assen.
On Stationsplein in March, a 24-year-old victim was pelted with a chair, a vase and a brick. The twenty-something was punched and kicked. In May, the suspect stabbed another in the leg with a knife. That victim also suffered facial fractures.
Major injuries after a violent explosion, the judge said. The teenager behaves well during his pre-trial detention and keeps drugs away. Guidance and supervision must be continued, the judge believes. The teenager had to pay damages of more than 5,600 euros.
