In fact, Youp van ‘t Hek was very critical of it in advance: the real-life soap by Ruud de Wild and Olcay Gulsen. Prior to the first episode, the comedian said that he finds it tasteless that the couple went on a trip to the earthquake zone in Turkey for their soap. He accused them of vanity.

Amateur drama

Although Ruud pretty pissed off was about those statements by Youp, the comedian is now going over the soap bunch again. “Fortunately, Olcay and Ruud had very few viewers with their degrading docusoap. That saves this couple a lot of shame on the street,” he writes in the VARA guide.

Youp himself has looked. “Yes of course. I am a huge disaster tourist who likes to scurry along dark channels. What I thought of it? I kept laughing out loud. For everything. The script. The amateur theater.”

Unbearably empty

Ruud and Olcay are done with Youp forever. “The unbearable emptiness of this soggy set. It is that I am crazy about this kind of people who take themselves very seriously, otherwise it would have been impossible…”

For a moment, Youp hoped that those earthquake images would not pass by in the soap: “Surely a camera crew did not confiscate airplane seats that doctors or nurses should have been sitting on?”

He continues: “I knew: that is not possible. This did not happen. It’s not so bad with humanity that a couple of people start scrounging among corpses for some third-rate soap opera. No, it is NPO and then that will certainly not happen.”

What does Ozcan think?

And yet it happened: the episode of Ruud and Olcay who ramble through the earthquake zone of Turkey was this week and gave NPO 1 a downright low.

What does Ozcan Akyol think? When asked, he says in the VARA guide: “Those people are already lying on the floor and they don’t deal any blows themselves, so that’s why I don’t think it’s choosing to be mean.”

He concludes: “It is an experiment and it does not work out well. You can also look at it positively: in the future, owners at the NPO will never decide to program this genre on that channel at that time.”
