Unfortunately, violence against a referee happens again and again. Now there were frightening reports from France.
This rugby player will probably never play a professional game again in his sporting life. A 17-year-old Frenchman is said to have hit a referee on the right cheek during his club Racing Club de Saint-Gaudens’ U19 game against Limoux on December 15. This is reported by the English newspaper “Sun”.
The French league association has now reacted and handed out a harsh punishment to the young rugby player. The 17-year-old is not allowed to play any more games for 20 years, which probably means the end of his career.
“Like you, they are only human and can sometimes make mistakes,” wrote the French rugby league referees, criticizing the apparent violence against one of them. “From insults to threats to obscene gestures, every referee has experienced this terrible situation.”
Physical attacks against referees have increased recently. The new attack would be the last straw.
