It turned out that his family did not have the money for the excavation and repatriation to Egypt. Enough money was raised through interventions by various organizations and crowdfunding. Now, a year later, the young man has been exhumed and reburied in Egypt.
“It is nice to see that so many people have selflessly committed themselves in recent months to give this young man an identity and a dignified funeral. It gives the relatives the opportunity to find peace,” says mayor Joachim Coens.
