Together with her father, stepmother and three step-siblings, Anna Kepner left Miami, Florida, on a cruise through the Caribbean. Things went wrong on board the Carnival Horizon, a Carnival Cruise Line ship. On Saturday, November 8, the teenager was found dead in her cabin.

The night before her body was found, Anna was not feeling well, according to her family, and returned to her cabin to rest. When she didn’t show up for breakfast the next morning, the family and cruise crew launched a search. Not much later, one of the cleaners found the girl’s body under her bed, wrapped in a blanket and hidden under life jackets.

The same day, the ship docked again in Miami, where the FBI, working with the ship’s security officers, opened an investigation into Anna’s death. They requested, among other things, the ship’s security footage and keycard data to determine who might have been in Anna’s cabin. They also performed an autopsy on her body and examined her phone.

Investigators have not yet released anything about the investigation, but according to American media they would focus on one of the step-siblings as a suspect. Anna’s stepmother is said to have asked for a postponement in a custody case, because the FBI had informed her that an investigation into one of her minor children would soon be opened. It is not clear whether this concerns the investigation into the death of Anna Kepner.
