Yle’s program spawned an avalanche of rude comments: A strong statement from the channel

Yle does not accept inappropriate behavior or commenting in its programs.

The Finnish version of the Swedish quiz show På Spåret, Hengaillaan, started on TV on Saturday. The show made headlines over the weekend when the contestants of the opening episode, Cristal Snow and Sauli Koskinen were subjected to severe online bullying after their TV appearance.

Cristal Snow commented on the comments she received on her own Instagram.

– Judging from the comments received, one would think that yesterday I would have murdered someone. Entertainment is such a serious place in Finland. Homophobia, misogyny. A seemingly inferior name-calling because, they say, I ruined a new entertainment program by being myself. I tried to tell jokes and be funny. Apparently I failed, Cristal wrote.

Yle has also taken a stand on bullying. Yle states in an Instagram post that it is very unfortunate to not intervene in cyberbullying, especially because it has happened more in the past week.

Member of the Portion Boys group competing in the Ylen New Music competition Tiina Forsby was subjected to severe online bullying last week. Forsby’s role in the band was insulted, for example, as “satisfier” and how his stage function is “spreading his ass”.

Yle states in the publication that bullying is not permissible in any context. According to Yle, each competitor brings “his own personality to the Hengaillaan program and throws himself into the live broadcast to compete with his general education”.

– Hengaillan does not accept homophobia or transphobia, sexism, racism, discrimination based on disability, health or other human characteristics or gender, harassment, or otherwise inappropriate actions or comments, commented Yle.

The program was buzzed about on social media even before the first episode was released. On Yle’s public Facebook page, there was fear, for example, that the Finnish version of the hit show would be “just a laugh”. In the Instagram post, Yle also takes a stand on the criticism of the program. The publication states that the program is only in the starting pits.

– We have done one episode and noticed things ourselves that did not work in the best possible way. We react to factual feedback and learn from it. Reasonable criticism of the program is always welcome and helps us make better television. It can and should be given, the publication says.
