Yle’s channels will disappear from 150,000 households

Up to 150,000 households will soon have to go to television stores if they want to watch Yle’s channels. You should check the compatibility of your TV with HD broadcasts well in advance.

Yle’s standard SD broadcasts end. Up to 150,000 Finnish households will have their TVs replaced by the spring of 2025 at the latest. Anu Kivistö

We told you on Tuesday that Yle will switch to HD, i.e. high-definition time, in the spring of 2025. In both the antenna and cable networks, the old basic format, i.e. SD-level broadcasts will end completely.

Watching Yle’s high-definition broadcasts also requires support from household devices.

Yle said in its press release that there are up to 150,000 antenna network households in Finland that need to get a new television if they want to watch Yle’s broadcasts even after the change.

Should I buy a new TV?

High-definition broadcasts enable a more accurate picture and a brighter color scheme. At the same time, broadcasts will receive support for multi-channel audio.

If you watch TV via an antenna network, you should ensure that the TV is HD-ready before the change that comes in the spring of 2025.

The receiver – either the TV or the set-top box connected to it – must have an HD tuner and the TV screen must be able to reproduce HD resolution. In antenna households, a DVB-T2 tuner must be found on the television.

The television network operator Digita instructs in its announcement to perform a channel search through the television’s settings. If the Yle TV1 HD channel is shown in channel slot 21, the television is HD-ready, and there is no need to purchase a new television.

According to Digita, there is no need to make changes to the existing antenna system due to Yle’s transition to HD.

A list of all TVs and set-top boxes suitable for watching HD broadcasts tested in Finland for both antenna and cable networks can be found at testattulitätt.fi.
