The “Mad Max” film series by George Miller is now 47 years old. The first production featuring Mel Gibson was released in 1980. In 2024, the latest blockbuster, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” was released, with Miller directing once again.
The recent film is a prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road” from 2015. Despite its stunning visuals, the film was not a box office hit, even though it received significant acclaim. Today marks the first Free-TV broadcast of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.”
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”: What It’s About
The story revolves around the warrior Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy). She grows up in a paradise-like oasis but is kidnapped there. While attempting a rescue, her mother dies. The leader of the biker gang is the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). In the post-apocalyptic wasteland, Furiosa fights for her freedom.
Meanwhile, Dementus finds himself in conflict with the despot Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme), the ruler of the Citadel. A power struggle ensues. Joe manages to seize control of the prisoners from Dementus, putting Furiosa’s fate in his hands. However, she doesn’t surrender and goes to great lengths to return home.
“Mad Max 5”: A Critical Yet Financial Flop
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” grossed approximately $174.3 million worldwide, according to “Box Office Mojo“. However, with a budget of $168 million, it was deemed a flop. In contrast, its critical reception has been strong, with a rating of 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received an impressive score of 90% from critics and 88% from the audience.
One review states: “‘Furiosa’ turns out to be a fantastic ‘Mad Max’ film with a daring narrative and well-crafted action.” Another reviewer notes, “Miller tells his own timeless story in the most poignant way possible.”
Additionally, a viewer comments: “It’s personal, emotional, and gets under your skin. Those expecting just another fast-paced, action-packed thriller will find that, but there’s so much more.” However, one critic argues, “Even with an original like George Miller at the helm, this once-successful film series has lost its momentum.”
