Laura Siegemund prevailed against the Bulgarian Viktorija Tomova at the Tennis Grand Prix and once again showed her mental strength.
With a concentrated performance, Laura Siegemund won her opening match at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix against Bulgarian Viktorija Tomova 4:6, 7:6, 6:1 on Monday evening. The Stuttgarter will meet the Pole Iga Swiatek in the round of 16.
Siegemund took a while to get into the game against Wiktorija Tomowa. It was already 0:3 in the first set until Siegemund was able to play to its strengths at the net more and more. In the meantime she was able to equalize to 4:4, but then still had to give up the set.
Siegemund benefits from her mental strength
A real thriller developed in the second set: Siegemund fought for several break points early on, but was unable to prevail at the crucial moment. She only used the sixth breakball to make it 3:2. However, Siegemund had to accept the quick re-break. Even a second break wasn’t enough for the 38-year-old to win the set. In the tiebreak it seemed as if she had nothing left to oppose Tomowa. But after 0:4, Siegemund came back again, scored seven points in a row and won the second set with a precise forehand shot to make it 7:6.
Siegemund started the third set with this momentum, got the first break, the second break and used the first power ball to win. “If you don’t play well, you just have to fight. And that’s what I did,” she said in an interview with the organizer. Things continue for Siegemund on Tuesday afternoon: With her doubles partner Vera Svonarjowa, she will compete against the Spanish duo Aliona Bolosova and Yvonne Cavalle-Reimers.
