Some of the inhabitants of Ruinen are concerned about lily cultivation at the village. They fear that the plant protection products that are used have a bad influence on their health.
That became clear tonight during the council meeting of the municipality of De Wolden. A resident came to record on behalf of a group of people from Ruinen and states that unrest has arisen.
“Twenty liliev fields have been added around the village. It is not just about our health, but also about our children. As a city council you have to understand that?” The request is therefore to stop lily growing.
In Drenthe, there are worries about lily growing in various places. Opponents fear possible health problems. They also say that the use of pesticides on liliev fields would have the chance of diseases such as Parkinson’s or if.
GroenLinks councilor Henk van IJzendoorn therefore came up with a request to the municipal administration. And that was: make sure that lily cultivation that can harm people cannot continue.
But that is not legally a feasible map, Alderman Gerrie Hempen-Prent (Municipal Interests) responded. The province of Drenthe is still drawing up policy on bulb cultivation. The alderman would like to wait and see then to set up rules for De Wolden.
The rest of the city council voted against GroenLinks’s request. All the groups and the alderman, however, emphasized that they take the concerns of the residents of Ruinen seriously.
