London (dpa -AfX) – The countries of the international sea shipping organization IMO have agreed on a global standard to gradually reduce greenhouse gas emissions in sea traffic. From 2028, a fine is due for every ship that exceeds a certain CO2 limit value, as IMO announced. According to the EU Commission, this is initially $ 100 per tonne CO2, and the punishment increases at higher exceedance. The agreement must be legally binding in October.
Step to the climate neutrality of shipping by 2050
The EU Commission wrote from a “historical agreement in the fight against climate change” and a “significant step towards climate neutrality of global shipping by 2050”. The IMO is a special organization of the United Nations.
The CO2 prize will generate income of $ 11 to $ 13 billion a year. The money is used to promote the development and use of emission-free or almost emission-free fuels, wrote the EU Commission./Mj/dp/he
