La Bâtie d’Urfé (dpa) – World champion Filippo Ganna won the time trial of the fourth stage at the 74th edition of the Critérium du Dauphiné of professional cyclists.

After the 31.9 kilometers from Montbrison to La Bâtie d’Urfé, the 25-year-old Italian prevailed with a lead of two seconds over Belgian Wout van Aert. The best German was Jannik Steimle (+1:40 minutes) in twelfth place.

Van Aert, who had just missed out on winning the sprint the day before, defended his yellow jersey as the overall leader and leads Mattia Cattaneo (Italy) by 53 seconds and three more to the three-time Vuelta winner Primož Roglič (Slovenia).

The strong, demanding race lasts until June 12th. The Dauphiné tour traditionally serves as a preparation for the Tour de France, which starts this year on July 1 in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark.
