The German water polo players surprisingly reached the final on the eighth day of the World University Games. The athletes Luka Herden and Antonia Kinzel won bronze. For the German basketball players, it was over in the semi -finals.
After a game exciting to the last second, the German team ended up 9: 8 against the New Zealanders.
Both teams had an open exchange of blows right from the start. After the New Zealanders won the first quarter 2-1, Germany came into play better in the second section and took a 4: 3 lead into the half-time break after two goals from Elena Ludwig.
The third quarter again belonged to the New Zealanders who took the lead back. So it went into the last eight minutes with a 6: 7 point of view. In these, the Germans were defensively stable and only allowed one goal. After Emma Seehafer equalized to 8: 8, Ionna Petiki made the victory 1:16 minutes before the end.
Germany already has a medal after the successful thriller. The gold medal is on Saturday at 5 p.m. USA.
German men fail because of Italy
Unlike the women, the German water polo players missed their way into the final. The men failed in the semifinals with 14:17 to Italy. The Italians started with a lot of momentum and pulled away with four goals ahead at the half -time break. In the third section, Germany was difficult to free itself from the dominance and was in the meantime with seven goals in the back.
However, the German team did not give up and only allowed a goal in the last section. However, your own four goals were not enough to make up for the high deficit.
German basketball players fail dramatic
Despite a strong catch -up, the German basketball players missed their way into the final. The German team lost 78:83 against Brazil. After a weak first half, Germany showed a significant increase in performance in the third quarter. After a break of 43:50, the German team turned up and, after a 16-0 run, set 69:59 after the 3. Quarter. With eleven points, Guard Lukas Herzog was the outstanding man of the third section. He scored all of his eleven points in the third section.
In the final quarter, however, the Brazilians came back to 69:66 after a 7-0 run. A real drama developed. The fighting court in the Essen Grugahalle had a significant role in this. At 74:72 for Brazil, the score suddenly switched to 74:72 for Germany during a break. There was minutes of chaos before the score was corrected and could be continued.
After minutes of waiting, Germany turned the game again (77:74). In crunchtime it was also hectic on the floor. Brazil came back and pulled away 20 seconds before the end with three points. The German team had nothing to oppose this.
Bronze in the long jump and discus
The Münster Luka Herder won the bronze medal in the long jump final. The 25-year-old jumped 7.96m and thus nine centimeters further than the Erfurt Simon Batz. Gold went to the Chinese Shu Heng (8.09m), silver to Koki Fujihara (8.00m) from Japan.
The German athletics team also won bronze medal in the final of the discus throws. Antonia Kinzel from Mannheim threw the disc 58.43m. “I already felt pressure as a defending champion. But people made a great atmosphere here. I’m great happy with bronze,” said Kinzel in the WDR.
Only the Turkish Ozlem Becerek (61.15m) and Anna Lindfors from Sweden (58.80m) continued. Joyce Oguama from Bochum became fifth in her home game with a width of 58.07m.
Yasmin Amaadacho just missed the medal
Yasmin Amaadacho missed a medal. At the final over 400m hurdles, the 21-year-old was fourth, 13 hundredths of a second behind the third-placed Sára Mátó from Hungary (55.92 seconds) with a personal best of 56.05 seconds. The Italian Alice Muraro (54.60) grabbed the title ahead of Michelle Smith from the American Virgin Islands (55.65).
In the final over 800m, the German Smilla Kolbe finished fifth with a time of 2: 01.42 minutes. Gold went to the Italian Eloisa Coiro (1: 59.84), silver to Veronica Vancardo from Switzerland, bronze to Spaniard Daniela Garcia Tena.
Varfuki Abe got the title over 110m hurdles. The Japanese secured the title with 13.47 seconds before the Spaniard Angel Diaz Rodriguez (13.58) and the South African Mondray Barnard (13.59). In the mixed competition over 4x400m hurdles, Poland secured the gold medal. Silver went to South Africa, bronze to the USA.
Vasquez loses home game and fails in the semi -finals
In the semi-finals of the tennis competition, the German Alessio Vasquez lost to the British Toby Samuel (6: 7, 3: 6). The 22-year-old Vasquez automatically won bronze after the defeat.
