‘World stars’ empty victims in love | 1Limburg

Being so incredibly in love with an international actor that you don’t realize you’re being scammed financially. The Maastricht police warn against this form of internet fraud.

According to the police, residents of Maastricht are approached via social media by scammers posing as world stars. Think of George Clooney, Tom Cruise or the manager of the South Korean boy band BTS.

Infatuation and money cheating
The ‘celebrities’ first build an emotional bond with their targets so that victims fall in love. Then the scammers strike: they ask their “loved ones” for money. “Don’t fall for it,” the police warned.

‘Don’t lose sight of reality’
On Tuesday, two victims reported to the police who lost money because of their ‘infatuation’. “Of course it sounds great to hear that these celebrities have fallen in love with you and want to go through life with you. But try not to lose sight of reality,” the police advise.
