World star Magnus Carlsen is missing from Tata Steel Chess, Anish Giri will defend the title

The Tata Steel Chess will have a strong field of participants in the coming edition. No fewer than three world champions will travel to Wijk aan Zee for the prestigious chess tournament. The big absentee is Magnus Carlsen

The biggest name in Tata Steel Chess is Ding Liren from China. He became world men’s chess champion in April this year. Ju Wenjun, women’s world champion, is also coming to Wijk aan Zee. Junior world champion Marc’Andria Maurizzi from France is also present.

“It will be another great edition,” says tournament director Jeroen van den Berg in a press release. “Never before have three reigning world champions been present. I am of course very happy with that. And I’m proud that we have four ladies in our tournament. This has never happened before in the current format of the tournament. Ju Wenjun plays in the Masters. Harika Dronavalli and Divya Deshmukh from India and our Dutch talent Eline Roebers will compete in the Challengers.”

Carlsen

The big absentee in Wijk aan Zee is Magnus Carlsen. He was present in previous editions. “Unfortunately, Magnus’ schedule does not allow him to participate with us this year. He plays several other tournaments in February and that means that he is not at our tournament for the second time in 20 years. We obviously hope to welcome him again in 2025. He really belongs to our tournament and is always welcome.”

Anish Giri, last year’s winner, will participate in the chess tournament again. Jorden van Foreest from the Netherlands is also present. The Tata Steel Chess will take place from 12 to 28 January 2024 in Wijk aan Zee.
