Roden made history this afternoon: a new world record for yo-yoing was set during Sinterklaas’ arrival on the Albertsbaan. So many children, parents and grandparents participated simultaneously that the Guinness Book of Records can add a new entry.

To make the record possible, hundreds of bright red Sinterklaas yo-yos were distributed for free in advance. The previous record was held by Sneek, where a thousand people yo-yoed simultaneously for one minute. In Roden that number was easily surpassed.

“I didn’t count them all, but the number of participants was well over a thousand. I am very satisfied,” says an enthusiastic Lammert Kalfsbeek of the Association for Popular Entertainment Roden. “Sinterklaas started the countdown and then we yo-yoed for a minute. That went great. Santa also liked that he could contribute.”

The good saint limited his contribution to the countdown moment. Taking part in the yo-yoing myself was not an option. “No, it’s an old man,” Kalfsbeek jokes.
