World record bottle cap necklace crushed with 11 kilometer ribbon

Residents of Zijtaart broke the record for ‘longest bottle cap chain’ on Sunday by stringing more than 2.5 million bottle caps together. Half the village worked on this project for two years. The aim was to lay a chain of 1.5 million bottle caps with a length of 6 kilometers through the village. “So we have gone beyond that,” says Twan van de Meerakker, one of the initiators.

The village helped en masse to break the record. That old record stood at 216,647 pieces of a total of less than a kilometer. That is less than a tenth of the number of bottle caps that are now strung together in Zijtaart. The idea arose two years ago to put the village on the map.

“No one would have dared to think that a million more bottle caps had been strung.”

In recent months, caps or bottle caps have been collecting everywhere. They also previously held a competition to see who could string the fastest. The grand final followed on Sunday, in which the last bottle caps were strung on the chain and all chains were made together. A notary has measured the distance. There are 222 bottle caps in a meter, so they didn’t have to be counted one by one.

There was a huge jubilation in the village afterwards. “We knew we would make it to the 6km target. But nobody would have dared to think that a million more bottle caps had been strung,” says Twan euphorically. “Our goals have more than been achieved”, he continues. “We will soon be both on the map and in the Guinness Book of Records and the togetherness in Zijtaart has never been so great.”
