But why are the quanta celebrated today? To know the answer is necessary look at the calendar through the eyes of American physicists. For them, in fact, today is day 4/14exactly the number that represents the “password” to enter the heart of the matter. In fact, there is a magic number, called Planck’s constant, which is worth approximately 4.14. It is the measure of the infinitely small, the “minimum size” of the universe: below this threshold, the laws we knowlike gravity dropping a bag or light traveling straight, they stop working and the magic begins.

The universe in small sips: the concept of quantum

The word “how much” may seem cold, but it hides a very romantic concept: the idea that nature doesn’t like waste and doesn’t do anything “at random”. To understand better, just think about when you prepare coffee: you can’t use a half pod or capsule, you have to use a whole one. Behind this revolution that we now call quantum physics, there is not a cold algorithm, but a man who seems to have stepped out of an elegant period film, Max Planckwhose story begins with a small personal twist. At the time of Planck’s birth in 1858 it was registered under the name Marxa German variant of Markus. It was only as a boy, perhaps to give a more modern and fresh edge to his image, that he decided to call himself Max. In narratives on the origin of quanta, this story has always represented something more: that young man who chose to change his name would also have changed the destiny of the world. Planck, in fact, was the first to understand that the universe is not a smooth and infinite silk ribbon, but a precious embroidery made of tiny separate points. Which he called “how many”.

Why celebrate World Quantum Day

But, in the end, what does knowing all this change for us? All. The truth is that without the intuition of that gentleman named Max (or Marx), our life would have remained stuck in the era of carriages. That “secret code” that he found among the atoms is, in fact, the spark that lights up all our modern conveniences. It is thanks to its “energy packages” if today we have transistors, or rather those tiny switches that allow computers to be very small, whether we can use laser to correct vision And, if our GPS it’s so precise.
