For Stephan Ambrosius from the second division soccer club Karlsruher SC, the dream of participating in the World Cup with Ghana has burst.

“Very annoying. Unfortunately I will miss the next games,” wrote the former German U21 international on Instagram on Monday: “I wish the KSC and the Ghana national team every success for the upcoming tasks.”

The central defender injured his thigh shortly before the end of the game in the 4-1 draw against Holstein Kiel on Saturday. Ambrosius, who was born in Hamburg to Ghanaian parents, had already made the jump to national coach Otto Addo’s provisional squad for the World Cup.

The loan from Hamburger SV is still waiting for his debut for Ghana.

Ghana will face Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay at the World Cup.
