World Cup 2022: Group draw for Qatar – rules, pots, participants

Firecracker in the World Cup preliminary round?

The preliminary round groups for the World Cup from November 21 to December 18, 2022 will be drawn on Friday from 6 p.m. German time in the “Doha Exhibition and Convention Center” in the Qatari capital (ARD broadcasts live from 5.55 p.m.). The German national team is threatened with tough tasks: Because the DFB team is only eleventh in the FIFA world rankings, which serves as the basis for the division of the pots, there could be a cracking duel in the first phase of the tournament.

The Germans may not yet have complete certainty about all three opponents on Friday evening. Due to the corona pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, only 28 of 31 qualified teams were known at the time of the draw, in addition to host Qatar. In addition, there are the winners of two intercontinental playoffs and a winner of the European playoffs. Ukraine’s semifinals in Scotland have been moved to June, with the winners playing Wales for the last European spot.

World Cup 2022: These nations have already qualified for the finals in Qatar

So far 27 out of 32 participants have secured their ticket for Qatar. In the night from Wednesday to Thursday, two more starters and a playoff participant will be played in Central and North America, who will later play against a team from Oceania. The USA and Mexico currently have the best cards for direct participation (to the table).

According to the current status, England has the most valuable squad with around one billion euros, followed by France (970.5 million) and Brazil (846 million). The DFB team is in sixth place with 740.5 million euros and is therefore the most valuable nation that did not make it into pot 1. Hosts Qatar bring up the rear with 14.43 million euros.

Pots in the draw: Germany for the 2022 World Cup only in pot 2

Due to the fact that some of the participating countries are still outstanding, the distribution of the lottery pots is not set in stone. However, one thing is certain: the eight group leaders will no longer give up their place in pot 1 and Germany will not make any more leaps up and down either. These pots are currently run by FIFA.

World Cup Draw: These rules apply to the Qatar 2022 draw on Friday

In principle, two nations from the same confederation are not allowed to play in a group. Of course, Europe is an exception: With 13 participating teams, there will be a clash between two UEFA members in five of eight groups.
