Per Mertesacker is ending his role as head of the youth academy at Arsenal FC. Where his professional journey takes him next remains exciting.

Per Mertesacker has decided to leave Arsenal FC after eight years as head of the youth academy. The former 2014 world champion is looking for a new professional challenge, although his future path is still unclear.

Arsenal confirmed on Monday that Mertesacker will be leaving the club at the end of the season. The 41-year-old took over the management of the youth academy after his playing career in 2018.

“Arsenal is and remains a very special club for me, so it was a difficult decision,” said Mertesacker. He is very grateful for the trust the club has given him: “Now it’s time to take on new challenges and develop myself further.”

Club boss Richard Garlick praised Mertesacker’s work and said that the club supported his decision, even if his departure was regretted. Mertesacker assured that he would remain fully focused until his last day at work with the Gunners. It is currently unclear where he will go after that.
