At the beginning of the year, Magnus Carlsen had a heated argument with an opponent. But now the Norwegian experienced a beautiful event: he got married.
The new year began with a heated argument for world chess champion Magnus Carlsen. On social media, the Norwegian engaged in a verbal duel with his opponent Hans Niemann over the World Blitz Chess Championship. The American accused the 34-year-old of cheating, to which Carlsen responded (read more about the escalation here). But he may have already forgotten the trouble. Because just a few days later, the chess star experienced a beautiful event: He married his partner Ella Victoria Malone on Saturday.
The two exchanged vows in the Holmenkollen Chapel in Oslo and were extremely happy. Photos show the two of them intimately and with friends. Malone wore a beautiful white silk dress with lace elements on the décolleté, arms and neck. She had tied her hair back in a kind of bun in the middle parting.
Carlsen wore a black suit, black bow tie and white shirt. Carlsen’s friend, sports commentator Sverre Krogh Sundbö, told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK after the wedding: “A very nice ceremony.”
According to the NRK, the sermon took place in a winter landscape and it was cold. However, the sky was said to be clear and without clouds. A spokesman for the wedding couple, Magnus Barstad, also joked on the station: “It may not be my taste to freeze everything you have, but the ice king and the ice princess get what they want.”
Like Carlsen, Malone comes from Oslo. Both otherwise keep their private lives largely out of the public eye. However, Ella Victoria Malone regularly accompanies Carlsen to chess tournaments. She told TV2 in May last year: “Sometimes it’s difficult to accompany him at these tournaments, but I do it because I want to be a good friend and support him.” Now she can do that as a wife.
