Next high-profile failure at the Australian Open 2025: As former tennis world number one Carolina Wozniacki announced, she will not be able to compete in the first Grand Slam tournament of the year Down Under as planned. The Romanian Simona Halep had previously had to cancel her participation.
“I have so many wonderful memories of Melbourne. And winning the Australian Open is of course one of my career highlights. Melbourne is one of my favorite cities in the world and I can’t wait to share it with my family and children “said Carolina Wozniacki in her statement, in which she did not give the reason for her cancellation of the Australian Open.
The first Grand Slam tournament is one in which she feels extremely comfortable. “I love the balls, I love the courts, I love the fans,” said Wozniacki, who promised to come back soon. “I hope I get a nice welcome when I see you there again. I’m sure I will. It’s a really special place,” said the 34-year-old Dane.
Wozniacki celebrates biggest victory at the Australian Open
Like Simona Halep, Wozniacki received a wild card for the Australian Open 2025. The Romanian had to cancel her start a few days ago. Halep recently injured her knee and shoulder and says she will have to take a break of several weeks.
For Wozniacki, the Australian Open is associated with very special memories. In Melbourne, the former world number one, who ended her career in 2020 and returned in 2023, celebrated her first and so far only Grand Slam triumph.
In 2018 she beat Halep in the final. After three hard-fought sets, the Dane celebrated a 7:6, 3:6, 6:4 victory. In 2011 she also reached the semi-finals Down Under and in the quarter-finals in 2012. Last year, the 34-year-old was eliminated in the second round.
