First World Championships, first title: Sha’Carri Richardson from the USA took the sprint crown at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Shericka Jackson of Jamaica took silver and sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce took bronze.

In a terrific 10.65 seconds, Richardson sprinted to the world title and her first international medal. Never before has an athlete run so fast at a world championships. Jackson (10.72) and Fraser-Pryce (10.77) couldn’t keep up. For the first time since 2017, the 100m titles for both women and men went to the USA, on Sunday (08/20/2023) Noah Lyles triumphed.

After the semi-finals, many things were still pointing towards the two Jamaicans, but it was Richardson’s hour in the final. The 23-year-old was unable to qualify for the World Championships in Eugene last year. At the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, she had to watch blocked. A doping test revealed marijuana use, which is why it was banned. Richardson explained this as dealing with the pressure and strain of her mother’s death.

Jackson, already second in Eugene, still has to wait for a World Championships gold medal in the 100m. Fraser-Pryce already has five of them in the closet, the 36-year-old won the first in Berlin in 2009. With bronze, however, “Pocket Rocket” took home her 15th World Championship medal and thus passed Usain Bolt in the list of the best. Allyson Felix (20) is still in the lead.

European Champion Gina Lückenkemper (Berlin) was eliminated after 11.18 seconds and fifth place in her semi-final.
