One looks in vain for Russians and Belarusians in the start lists after the invasion of the Ukraine. The world association World Athletics (WA) has banned all athletes, coaches and officials from Russia and Belarus from all events under its auspices “for the foreseeable future” because of the attack on Ukraine. The Russian Federation (RusAF) has been suspended since 2015 because of the doping scandal. Even as neutral athletes, Russian and Belarusian athletes are not allowed to start at the World Cup.

Host USA wants to turn the World Cup into a festival with dozens of stars. It doesn’t matter whether it’s shot put world record holder Ryan Crouser, sprinters Noah Lyles and Christian Coleman or hurdle stars Sydney McLaughlin and Devon Allen – the US team will provide a spectacle at the completely renovated Hayward Field.

Due to the cancellations of javelin throwers Johannes Vetter and Christin Hussong, heptathlete Carolin Schäfer and walker Jonathan Hilbert alone, the German team in Oregon is missing four possible medal aspirants. The biggest hopes are Malaika Mihambo, Olympic champion in the long jump, and Kristin Pudenz, second in the Olympic Games with the discus. The walkers around Christopher Linke, pole vaulter Bo Kanda Lita Baehre or the German javelin champion Julian Weber could also provide a positive surprise.

While there were often complaints about the heat at the last World Cup in 2019 in Doha, it will be hot again in Eugene, but the humidity will not be nearly as high as in the capital of Qatar. The German athletes had prepared for the competitions at a training camp in Santa Barbara, California, over the past few days. After cancellations due to injury and illness, 78 German athletes were last scheduled for Oregon. In order to be able to prepare specifically for the home European Championships in Munich from August 15th to 21st, the majority of the athletes will fly back to Germany directly after the respective competition.

The fact that the World Cup landed in Eugene – with 170,000 inhabitants by far the smallest venue in the history of the World Cup since 1983 – still occupies the investigators today. Eugene is the founding place of the world’s most powerful sporting goods manufacturer – Nike. The mega company is said to have been partly responsible for the fact that the World Cup was surprisingly awarded to Oregon in spring 2015. Surprising because the title fights were not even advertised by the world association, which was then called the IAAF.

The spectacle with the best track and field athletes in the world begins in just under 30 minutes. The competitions at Eugene’s Hayward Fields are the first track and field championships to be held on US soil. The stadium was built at a cost of around $200 million and is located on the University of Oregon campus. For the World Cup, the seating capacity was increased from 12,650 to 30,000 spectators with additional grandstands.
