Information security with regard to special information at the NCTV and the police was not in order. In addition, the NCTV and the police must be better prepared for abuse by employees with justified access to special information. These are the most important conclusions of the investigation by the National Audit Service into the handling of special information by the NCTV and the police. Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel adopts the recommendations of the National Audit Service.

Minister Van Weel: “It remains very important to comply with applicable procedures and regulations for information security. Information security is never finished and measures must therefore be constantly tested and tightened. We are already working hard on this. Immediately after the arrests, the NCTV and police started improving information security and have improved the handling of special information in recent times. The recommendations of the Central Government Audit Service are of great value in this further process and are taken into account in their entirety. Now it is important to continue working on continuous improvement and increased awareness”

Following the arrest of two people in October 2023 on suspicion of possessing and disclosing state secret information, the Minister of Justice and Security initiated an independent investigation into the handling of special information by the NCTV and the police. The Central Government Audit Service has looked at the situation as it was on October 1, 2023.

Some of the recommendations have actually already been followed up with measures taken following the arrests in October 2023 by the NCTV and police. All recommendations from the National Audit Service are fully taken into account in further improvements and increasing awareness in dealing with special information. Minister Van Weel has asked the National Audit Service to conduct additional research at the NCTV into the follow-up to the recommendations and to make additional recommendations where necessary. The police will include the recommendations in the internal audit cycle and will report to the Audit Service on progress.
