Wool certifiers Woolmark and the specialist for the dry color of textiles, Colourizd, have introduced a new method for coloring wool and wool mixtures that significantly reduce resource consumption and costs.
QuantumColor from Colourizd is a resource-saving coloring process that only requires a network agent as well as a bluesign-certified pigment and binder that is injected into a yarn network. Only half a liter of water is used per kilogram of yarn compared to traditional coloring techniques that need between 60 and 120 liters per kilogram of yarn.
Colourizd QuantumColor: No chemicals, significantly less water
The technology makes bleaching, pretreatment and wastewater output superfluous. This does not use a variety of chemicals that are traditionally used in coloring, such as sodium hydroxide solution, acids, bleach and salts. At the same time, the new method enables a wide range of color and smooth textures.
“After extensive tests with merino wools and wool mixes, we found that the Colourizd team developed something really revolutionary for the wool industry,” commented Julie Davies, General Manager Processing Innovation & Education Extension at Woolmark.
“The QuantumColor process offers long-lasting solutions and creates washed-out to rich colors for wool and wool mixtures. Since it consumes very little water, suppliers can: inside woolen and wool mixing yarns without the need for an infrastructure for sewage treatment,” she adds.
In addition to 100 percent merino wool, the coloring method was also validated for cotton mixes, Tencel and Nylon. “In a number of thread enemies from 30/2nm to 80/1nm, the Colourizd QuantumColor pigment process fulfills all standards for color fastness and durability”, according to the authorized laboratory partners: inside that carried out the woolmark tests on yarns, fabrics and clothing.
“Woolmark represents the gold standard in the wool industry and will make a significant contribution to offering our process with lower effects and higher performance,” explains Colourizd CEO Jennifer Thompson. “Our current customers include Kontor Brands (Wrangler and Lee), Cone Denim and Gant. Working with Woolmark will enable us to achieve a completely new market and to offer sustainability and performance solutions worldwide.”
Woolmark and Colourizd will present the new technology at the Pitti Immagine Filati, which takes place from the first to third July in Florence, Italy.
