The woodlark is a rare breeding bird that occurs in certain places in our country, including in the Aekingerzand in the Drents-Friese Wold. The songbird makes specific demands on its environment and lives mainly on sandy soils and heathlands.
The breeding season runs from March to July. In one season, a bird couple two clutches spawn from three to five eggs. After about two weeks, the young leave the nest, although they do stay nearby. The birds make their nests on the ground.
Peace and space are essential for ground brothers. Forest ranger Kees van Son finds a looted nest and explains why. “The nest has probably been eaten by crows. The birds are not afraid of people, they have built their nest right next to a path. But things can go wrong when people walk by. The birds then keep flying off the nest. Crows get that on.” at some point and make use of it.” The urgent request is therefore to stay on the trails.
