Successful start to the European Championship tournament: The German national basketball team of women won their opening match against Sweden on Thursday evening (June 19, 2025) with a deserved 89:76 (44:27) against Sweden. With this compulsory victory, the start in Group D was successful.
An effective offensive paired over long distances with a solid defensive have led to the success of the DBB team, which, however, also showed a longer phase of weakness in the second half.
Nevertheless: The German team can go into the same place with a lot of self -confidence in the second game on Friday evening (8 p.m.). However, opponents of Spain is one of the title favorites and is likely to demand significantly more women than the Scandinavians were able to do.
More aggressive and effective
The German team started extremely confidently in front of the Hamburg audience. There was nothing to be seen from an initial nervosity or uncertainties. The team of trainer Lisa Thomaidis overrun the Swedes in the first few minutes.
It was 16: 2 after only four minutes for the DBB team. Luisa Geiselsöder in particular looked wide awake in the initial phase, she scored eight points until 19: 9 and was the best thrower in the field.
The German team played more aggressive and more effective. And Leonie Fiebich also switched himself into the game and converted two threes. After the 1st quarter, the German team led with 27:16.
Clear break
At the beginning of the 2nd quarter, it hooked a little in the German offense. Sweden brought Sweden a little closer to two misses with the simultaneous accuracy of the concures. But Alexis Perterson then scored twice for the DBB team.
At 33:20 the lead was still quite lavish, also because the Sweden in the offense did not go smoothly and she gave some throwing opportunities lightly. Geiselsöder then suddenly played back in the foreground and scored 38:23 with a threesome.
With the break whistle, a 44:27 glowed on the scoreboard – and was also in order because the defensive worked stably – even if the intensity overall had decreased a little in the German game.
Many misses
The German women came out of the cabin with a lot of momentum and initially worked hard to further expand the lead. Forward Frieda Bühner got better and better up to the stand of 53:39 and now led the scorer list with twelve points.
However, a phase of the doldrums followed, in which none of the two teams could score over a few minutes. The first to get into play were the Swedes – and they were able to shorten to 53:47. The DBB team had lost their offensive strength. It was Fiebich who woke up the team again with a spectacular threesome. The 3rd quarter ended with 58:49.
DBB team in combat mode
In the last round, it had to be mobilized again. And the German women succeeded. Fiebich with another threesome caused great cheers in the hall. The Scandinavians made bitter resistance and did not want to beat themselves.
But the German team also switched to combat mode and defended itself against the Swedish efforts. Geiselsöder, Bühner and Co. could not be obtained and left the hall more than 89: 76 winners.
