On the tenth matchday of the women’s Bundesliga, SC Freiburg won late against Bayer Leverkusen. The match winner is substitute Tessa Blumenberg.
In the Monday evening game (November 10th) of the women’s Bundesliga, SC Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen drew 2-1 (0-0). Goalscorer Vanessa Fudalla initially gave the Werkself the lead (65th minute), and substitute Tessa Blumenberg equalized for the Breisgau team almost immediately (68th). The 20-year-old also scored the celebrated winning goal for the sports club shortly before the end (87th).
Freiburg with three bankruptcies in a row
The starting position before the game was clear: the women of SC Freiburg, who had started the season well, wanted to get back on the road to success after three defeats in a row. Bayer Leverkusen, meanwhile, had the opportunity to draw level on points with second-placed VfL Wolfsburg with an away win.
The focus is initially on the defense
However, both teams initially focused on being secure defensively. This led to a competitive game that largely took place in the midfield. However, at the expense of the offensive – there were no chances to score in the first 30 minutes, only a few harmless shots.
Laura Benkarth parried strongly against Vanessa Fudalla
The visitors had the first big opportunity of the game. Fudalla was sent steeply, the striker shot from 13 meters from the left to the far corner, but Freiburg goalkeeper Laura Benkarth made a strong save.
Double chance for SC Freiburg
Shortly before the break, the hosts had two good chances. Meret Felde won the ball in midfield, marched forward and fed Aurelie Csillag, who was also running along. The striker shot from the edge of the penalty area, but Leverkusen keeper Charlotte Voll parried for a corner (43′). After this, the ball landed in the backcourt at the feet of Nia Szenk, who shot the ball from over 20 meters towards the Bayer goal. Voll was there again and saved with his fingertips (44′).
A little later, Leverkusen should have taken the lead. Kristin Kögel suddenly appeared completely free in front of Benkarth, but the SC keeper remained the winner in the direct duel (45th + 1). So it went into the break goalless.
Aurelie Csillag fails due to Charlotte Voll
Right at the start of the second half, with a bit of luck, Csillag made his way down the left side. However, the Freiburg striker failed from five meters and a very tight angle because of the strong volley, which directed the ball around the post (46th).
Ines Fudalla presents, Tessa Blumenberg counters
As a result, the game calmed down a bit – until the 65th minute. Leverkusen’s Loreen Bender asserted herself strongly on the right against Freiburg’s left-back Lisa Karl, crossed inside, where Fudalla headed into the far corner from six meters. The seventh goal of the season for the Bayer striker, who is now leading the scorers list.
The sports club responded quickly. Just three minutes later, substitute Leela Egli was sent straight down the left side. The Swiss broke into Leverkusen’s penalty area and passed across to Blumenberg, who was also a substitute, who pushed the ball over the line from four meters (68′).
Leverkusen now pushed for the winning goal, but the Freiburg footballers fought back. When everything looked like a draw, the sports club struck again. Blumenberg ran up against Bayer defender Lilla Turanyi – and won the ball. The 20-year-old ran alone towards goalkeeper Voll, stayed cool and made it 2-1 for the Breisgau women – also the final score.
Bayer missed the jump to third place in the table
This ended a black series for SC Freiburg: the Breisgau women were unable to win six league games against Leverkusen – now it was that time again. The sports club is now in seventh place with 16 points from ten games. Bayer, however, missed the jump to third place in the table and is now fifth (19 points).
Both teams continue the weekend after next. Freiburg then hosts Carl-Zeiss Jena (November 22nd, 12 p.m.), while Leverkusen meets SGS Essen (November 22nd, 2 p.m.).
