The SC Freiburg footballers not only have to come to terms with a significant defeat against RB Leipzig, but also have to lose contact with the Champions League places.

The SC Freiburg footballers missed the jump to third place on Monday. After goals from Emilia Asgeirsdottir (11th). The Breisgau women lost Marlene Müller, Annabel Schasching (73rd) and Lisa Baum in a 2-4 defeat against RB Leipzig. Svenja Fölmli (78th) and Luca Birkholz (88th) were only able to shorten the score.

Freiburg women get themselves into trouble

The Freiburg team started offensively and had their first big opportunity after less than two minutes. But Lisa Karl’s shot whizzed centimeters over the Leipzig goal. RB keeper Elvira Herzog would have had no chance. Leipzig didn’t have much of an idea at the start, but were extremely dangerous from the first action: Gina Chmielinski tested Laura Benkarth with a long-range shot – too central but shot sharply. The Freiburg goalkeeper defended the ball for a corner, but was then powerless when Emilia Asgeirsdottir pushed the ball over the line after a header from Julia Landenberger (11th).

SC Freiburg then got themselves into trouble: After an actually unpromising cross pass, Freiburg’s Nia Szenk played the ball right into the feet of Marlene Müller, who simply shot from around 24 meters. The shot – actually far too central – went into the goal behind Benkarth, who was positioned about four meters in front of the goal (32nd).

Freiburg presses, Leipzig counters

The 0-2 half-time score put Freiburg in the unpleasant situation of having to throw everything forward in the second half and thus having to offer Leipzig space to counterattack. Marlene Müller almost used the first counterattack to decide. But Benkarth was able to prevent her shot with strong foot defense (49′). However, Benkarth was powerless on the next dangerous counterattack. Annabel Schasching used Asgeirsdottir’s lay-up for her second goal of the season.

The game was decided. For a short time it seemed as if Svenja Fölmli could make the game exciting again with her goal to make it 1:3 (78th). But just a few minutes later, Lisa Baum restored the old distance (85th). The second Freiburg goal from Luca Birkholz (88th) was ultimately just a cosmetic result.

Freiburg is now under pressure

Freiburg remains in sixth place with 13 points and is now three points behind the Champions League places. Leipzig now moves up to tenth place with ten points. However, in the fight for the coveted European Cup places, the Breisgau women can make up ground again next Thursday. Then they meet their rivals TSG Hoffenheim in Sinsheim.
